Melissa Rubin Bio Picture

These pieces, from my Kabuki Days series, were inspired by my time traveling in Japan on a Fulbright Fellowship. While there I attended traditional Kabuki and Noh theater. Kabuki literally means “to be out of the ordinary” and I was struck by the visual poetry, the tremendous emotion captured in the masks, colors and movements. The original art works are monotypes: a printmaking process which is done quickly, to capture the intense energy of the image.”
